Staff Ride - Grenoble
Anglia has been working with Dr Peter Lieb of the War Studies Department at Sandhurst to develop a Staff Ride that looks at Counter-Insurgency Operations in June and July 1944 in the Grenoble region of Southern France.
HQ 29 EOD and Search Group are just back from the first one and Peter commented as follows:
'The itinerary follows a chronological line with the first two days in the Vercors and the third day in the Tarentaise. The main problems and challenges of COIN/anti-partisan ops and mountain warfare came very well across and were treated in depth over the three days.
Despite the fact that the German approach in 1944 was quite the opposite of what we are doing today in Afghanistan, the constant problems of a regular army fighting a guerilla war became apparent. It was also very beneficial that a number of tasks had to be considered from the guerrilla's perspective.'
