Yorks and Lancasters' Tour 2011
The York and Lancaster Regimental Association tour this year certainly spanned the centuries. They began with a look at Agincourt and from went straight to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Headquarters just outside Arras for a most fascinating visit. The yard was full of headstones bound for far flung places like Somalia and the workshop was busy working on some of the 8,000 stones that they produce every year.
There was no better place to be on 1st July than at the Sheffield Memorial Park at Serre having driven down via Vimy Ridge and the Tunnels and Wellington Quarry. This intrepid group switched wars again the next day visiting Dunkirk and hearing at first hand the story of Colonel Leslie Wright who was evacuated from Calais in 1940. His typically English and understated account of events was a real highlight and a privilege to witness.
On the final morning we paid our respects and held a short service at Fromelles before heading for the coast. Another successful tour for this happy band of friends who enjoy the lunches, fine dining and drinks parties that are as important a part of their time away as the endless fount of amusing stories and fascinating facts delivered by Philip Pearce, their favourite Anglia Guide.
