The first extermination camp to open was Chelmno, just over 40 miles north of the city of Lodz. Over 150,000 people were murdered there, mainly Jews from the Lodz ghetto.
Unlike most of the other Death Camps, extermination did not feature the use of permanent gas chambers, but was carried out by means of specially created gas vans pumping carbon monoxide into the interior.
A new addition to ANGLIA's holistic approach to Holocaust studies, it is now possible to visit Chelmno and the site of the Lodz ghetto, the second largest ghetto in the Nazi empire.
This tour can be combined with a visit to Warsaw and Treblinka, or to Krakow and Auschwitz-Birkenau.
