Journey’s End: Centenary Homecoming Production

Starting this autumn Anglia is delighted to offer a selection of tours each of which focuses on the study of R C Sherriff’s Journey’s End, a play which leaves no holds barred in exposing the psychological and physical challenges men faced.

This hard-hitting classic is the only WW1 play written by a soldier who fought in the war. Sherriff was injured in the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) exactly one hundred years ago and wrote it ten years later. A London critic at the time said, "This is less a play than a memorial to the dead."

It tells the story of a company of officers in a trench over three days leading up to a catastrophic offensive. Sherriff said, "I didn't need to create the characters, they just walked fully formed on to the page."

These tours provide an opportunity to see a performance of the play either in Ypres (10 October to 12 November 2017 in the historic Kruitmagazijn a building which, with its three metre thick walls, which has survived three wars) or in Thiepval Church on the Somme (18 September to 8 October 2018).

This is the first production for MESH Theatre, formed by a company of professionals to take war dramas to site-specific locations. Founder Sally Woodcock says, "live theatre brings to the Battlefields that vital missing dimension: a 'breathing' rendition of the physical and mental ordeals men faced." The event promises to be a timely and profoundly moving feature on the WW1 Remembrance calendar.
