The Battle of Hastings, fought on 14th October 1066, is probably the most famous battle in English history. It marks a point at which the course of these islands’ history was changed dramatically and permanently.
Beginning with a guided walk of the battlefield where Duke William defeated King Harold’s army, the tour looks both at the events of the Norman invasion and the conquest that followed. Your expert guide will bring to life the events of that fateful day before moving on to a castle nearby to examine the process of conquest, prompting your students to consider how a force of just a few thousand Normans went about subduing a hostile nation of nearly two million. Exploring the purpose and nature of castles will allow students to study history at a local level, bringing their understanding of wider European events down to a single community or location.
